There isn't a right answer here. There's just the answer that fits your family, your home, and this exact season you're in.
When Indoor Feels Right
Some of the most tender images I crave to make happen inside a family's own home. Not a studio. Not a rented space. Their actual kitchen, their actual hallway, the actual couch where bedtime stories happen every single night.
There's a quiet kind of magic in that. The soft window light in the morning. A toddler in pajamas still warm from sleep. The little rituals no one else sees such as pouring cereal, brushing tangled hair, a dad lifting his daughter onto his shoulders just to reach the cereal box on the top shelf.
Indoor sessions tend to feel right when:
- You have a new baby and need a calm, controlled space
- Your days are ruled by nap schedules and you don't want to fight the clock
- You want your Alameda or Oakland home itself to be part of the story
- You're marking a season such as a nursery, a first home, a holiday morning
- You simply want your family relaxed, unhurried, and completely themselves
Home sessions let everyone move at their own pace. Kids play with their own toys. Parents aren't managing logistics. And when nobody's performing for the camera, that's when the real moments show up - the hand squeeze, the giggle, the way a little one looks up at their mom like she hung the moon.
If this sounds like your family, you can see more of these quiet-at-home moments over on Families.
When Outdoor Feels Right
Then there's the Bay Area itself and, well, it's hard to compete with it. The eucalyptus grove at Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line or redwoods at Joaquin Miller Park. Golden light pouring through Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. Alameda Beach at sunset, when the whole sky turns the same color as your little one's cheeks.
Outdoor sessions tend to feel right when:
- Your kids have big energy and need room to run and climb
- You're drawn to a specific East Bay or San Francisco spot that already means something to your family
- You want that golden, glowing light across the whole group
- Grandparents or extended family are joining and everyone needs space to spread out
- You want the session to double as a little family outing
There's something freeing about the outdoors, too. Kids who feel stiff in front of a camera indoors often loosen right up the second there's a hill to climb or a trail to wander. I follow wherever that energy leads. Child-led moments, a plan with flexibility, and plenty of room for the unexpected. That's when the real magic happens.
If you're dreaming in golden hour and open sky, this is where Families sessions really shine. And if it's a wedding day you're picturing surrounded by that same Bay Area light, you'll find that on Weddings too.
You Don't Actually Have to Choose
Some of my favorite sessions do both. We start at home with the quiet stuff such as snuggling on the bed, getting dressed, and making pancakes during morning light. Then, we wander outside to your front porch, backyard, a nearby park or trail. One gallery, two feelings: the closeness of home and the openness of the outdoors, woven into one story of your family's real, ordinary, beautiful day.
A Few Bay Area Things Worth Knowing
Our weather has a mind of its own. Sunny in Walnut Creek can mean foggy in the San Francisco Sunset District, sometimes in the same afternoon. If we're shooting outdoors, I'll help you choose a location that matches the light we actually want, not just the one on the calendar. Golden hour also shifts with the seasons (later in summer, earlier in winter) and a few of the most photogenic spots around San Francisco require a permit for professional sessions, which is one more reason it helps to plan with someone who already knows the area.
So, Indoor or Outdoor?
Ask yourself how you want to feel when you look at these photos years from now. If it's the walls that held your family during this chapter (the nursery, the first apartment, the home you're about to leave) indoor is calling you. If it's the hills, the fog, the ocean behind you on an ordinary afternoon - outdoor is calling you.
Either way, what I'm really photographing isn't the setting. It's the connection and the feeling of who you are becoming together. The way your toddler reaches for your hand without thinking about it. The glance between siblings mid-laugh. That happens just as beautifully on your living room floor as it does on a hill with a view of the bay.
Still not sure which way to go? All we've got to do is get started. Reach out here, tell me a little about your family, and we'll figure out the rest together.
