Places where you don’t feel in a rush to leave, where you and your kids can explore long after I'm gone, and where your photos reflect who you really are together.
Here are some of my favorite East Bay family photography locations I keep coming back to, especially around Alameda. Each one was chosen not just for how it looks, but for how it feels.
1. Crab Cove - Alameda, CA

Families with young children, playful sessions, nature exploration, tall trees, and soft coastal textures

The light here is especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon, wrapping everything in a soft, golden glow.

Crab Cove is one of those places that instantly puts everyone at ease. It has a quiet, tucked-away feeling compared to busier beaches, which makes it perfect for families who want a more relaxed experience, especially if you have little ones who need space to wander.
What makes this location so special is the variety. You’ll find sandy paths, low grasses, driftwood, and calm shoreline views all within a short walking distance. Kids can ride their bikes, look for shells, watch birds, or simply run freely without the pressure of “performing” for the camera.

2. Alameda Beach - Alameda, CA

Why You'll love it:
There’s something timeless about Alameda Beach. The wide shoreline, the gentle waves, and the expansive sky create a sense of openness that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in the East Bay. There is plenty of room for kids to just be kids, which always leads to the most authentic moments.
This is a dream location for families who want movement in their photos like walking along the water, kids running toward the shoreline, parents holding hands as the sun dips lower in the sky. There’s space to breathe here, which often leads to more natural, connected images.
One of my favorite things about this spot is how the light reflects off the sand and water, creating that soft, luminous glow that feels both warm and romantic. It’s especially beautiful for families who are drawn to a more minimal, neutral aesthetic.
Parking: There is free street parking available. On weekends it is challenging to find parking on Shoreline Drive, so the surrounding neighborhoods are your best bet.
3. Habitat Garden at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach - Alameda, CA
Best For:
Nature-inspired sessions, textured greenery, and a more intimate, tucked-away feel
Best Times of Day:
Golden hour (about 60–90 minutes before sunset) is where this location truly shines
Why You'll love it:
This spot feels like a hidden gem within Alameda. The Habitat Garden offers a softer, more organic backdrop compared to the open beach. Think native plants, winding paths, a row boat, and layers of greenery that add depth and richness to your images.
It’s especially beautiful for families who love a more earthy, natural aesthetic. The textures here photograph beautifully year-round, and the space feels calm and grounded. Perfect for slowing down and focusing on connection.
Because it’s a bit more enclosed, it also works well on windier days when the beach might feel too exposed. It gives us that same coastal charm, but with a little more shelter and intimacy.
4. Joaquin Miller Park - Oakland, CA
Best For:
A mix of forest and open views, adventurous families, and a slightly more elevated, cinematic feel
Best Times of Day:
The morning

Joaquin Miller Park offers a beautiful blend of wooded trails and scenic overlooks. It’s a great option if you want variety within a single session, lush greenery paired with glimpses of the Bay.
There’s something a little more adventurous about this location. It feels like a place where stories unfold, where kids climb, parents explore alongside them, and the session feels less like a photoshoot and more like a shared experience.

5. Morcom Rose Garden - Oakland, CA
Best For:
Romantic family sessions, motherhood portraits, elegant floral backdrops, and families who love a timeless garden feel

Golden hour (60 to 90 minutes before sunset) for dreamy light, warm tones, and glowing florals.
Why You’ll Love It:
The Morcom Rose Garden feels classic, peaceful, and effortlessly beautiful. With rows of blooming roses, stone stairways, and lush greenery, this location creates a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that photographs beautifully in every direction.
What makes this spot especially magical is how it balances elegance with warmth. Kids can explore the pathways and garden spaces naturally while parents relax into the moment, creating photos that feel connected instead of overly posed.
When the roses are in bloom mid-May to mid-September, the colors and textures add such a romantic softness to your gallery without overwhelming your family as the focus. It’s especially stunning for motherhood sessions, multi-generational portraits, and families who want images that feel both vibrant and timeless.
This location also offers beautiful variety in a smaller area, making it ideal for little ones or shorter sessions where you still want a full, rich gallery of images
